Two Flints

Hello,

Can you help me with listing movies where the Spencer was used as one of the firearms.

I know one movie and it really shows the Spencer is several good fight scenes  -  "Last Stand at Saber River" with Tom Selleck.  Any others?   What about Civil War, or Indian War  movies where the Spencer was used.?

I'd appreciate your input and thanks.

"Unforgiven"  Ned had a Spencer, and knew how to use it too.

In "the undefeated", featuring the Duke and Rock Hudson,
a fistfight is stopped by the "bang" of a Spencer Carbine (the gun is visible for 2-3 seconds)

in the very bad "Cold Mountain", one can see a Spencer Carbine, which is a Romano gun from my knowledge

and last but not least... My personal opinion is that in the last scene of "the good, the bad and the ugly", Clint Eastwood shoots a Spencer Carbine modified into a Buffalo Rifle. I'm not sure, but I think so. Watch it on DVD, it is in the very last minutes of the movie.

The Spencer was also used in the movie 'The Blue and the Gray', and in that movie, features the BEST use I've ever seen of a Spencer on film.  It shows Abraham Lincoln shooting the Spencer on the White House Lawn!  It also shows a 'scout' shooting one on the same lawn.  Christopher Miner Spencer is loading the carbine for them.......

The Spencer was also used in 'Son of the Morning Star', and it was also used in 'Return to Lonesome Dove'.

I think that the Blue & Gray charicter was based (very loosely) on Francis Lombard of the 1st Mass Cav., who carried a prototype Spencer from late 1862 on. However, Lombard did not survive the war.

As I recall. there is also aa scene in Dances With Wolves of a bunch of green cavalry troops standing inspection with Spencers, and one sets off a round accedently.

Arizona, I think the movie you are referring to (where the trooper fires accidently) is Son of the Morning Star.  I don't remember any such scene in Dances with Wolves, but I may be wrong.

You are right! I don't get to the movies often enough.

Howdee Clyde,
At the end of GB&U, Blondi uses a Sharp's to shoot the noose. It sure would've been cool if Clint used a Spencer back then... 8)

Heck, as far as I am concerned the Spencer should have equal billing as a co-star with Eastwood and Freeman in "Unforgiven!"

There was one carried by an Indian, I believe, in one of those "Return to Gunsmoke" type TV movies a few years back w/ James Arness.

It doesn't count as a movie but there was a "Simon and Simon" episode that revolved around a Spencer and the bad guy was shot with one.  We gotta take all the exposure we can get, except from those idiots on the "history" channel.  Gravity feed Spencer, I feel sorry for Carradine.

A long time ago, I saw a B&W Western, where one of the bad guys had a Spencer Rifle - 1860 3-bander.  For all I know, this might have been silent, or at least had bad sound.  Anyway, the reason I remember the film was that the story-line had them drop a rock on the guy's rifle, and bent it so it couldn't shoot. I nearly screamed at the set, as the bent rifle was a Spencer, and it sure didn't look rubber. I thought "What a waste of a good rifle!"

'Just wondering if anyone remembers seeing a B&W western sequence like this.

I had the only original Spencer carbine in the film INTO THE WEST. The other troopers had Spencer copies. It was used to shoot some taxidermied horses and one Indian. They even filmed my brass cases on the ground, being careful not to show the central fire primers.

Did they paint the brass "copper?"
