Going to try my hand at these.
I've load the plastic hulls so I know size, primer, powder, wads, star crimp.

Is there anything I should know that differs from the plastic hulls?
Such as, do I need to dip the end of the hull in parafin wax each time before use a roll crimp?
This the first for the paper so advice is welcome. It might same me a few screwed up hulls.

Howdy,
I've loaded on a MEC, but using a star crimp. I used a special starter (for paper hulls) from MEC.
Never heard of dipping in wax, but I can tell the paper already has a wax coating.

I've decided to use paper hulls with my pumps, so I haven't been loading BP in them lately.

Some 35+ years ago I picked up some reloading stuff for SG froma  co-worker. There was a little plug-in iron that you inserted into the paper hulls to heat them up and rewax them if needed. Most are good to go, but sometimes the older ones needed waxing. I had a chunk of wax with it, but I have no idea what it was made of. It was hard. As soon as I got plastic hulls, that iron went by the wayside. Wish I would have kept it.  ::)

Doc O, I've been shooting nothing but the paper hulls for about 9 months now and love them. I load them 2 ways. One is like they were loaded with BP powder, overpowder card, lubed fiber wad, shot, overshot card and finally a roll crimp. Most of the loading is done by hand and on my Mec Sizemaster. The roll crimp is done on my drill press using a $12 plastic roll crimper purchased from Precision Reloading. The second way is done with BP and then a short plastic wad made for old English guns that fire the 2 1/2 " shells. Then dump shot and roll crimp. The roll crimp not only looks great for cowboy loads but it is the best crimp to use. The paper hulls that I use are Federals and Fioochi. Both are straight walled hulls and easy to load. I trim my hulls by cutting off the old crimp first.

Thanks for the info guys.

Fairshake. That is just what I am looking for. You answered everything I needed.
One last thing. Where do you get your short plastic wads and is there a particlar wad to get?

Some swear by the Red WW AA wad, or the Claybuster replacement.  However, there is no magic.  you can choose a wad that FITS your wad column.  I have used a variety of 1 1/4 oz field wads with light charges of BP.  For example, about 57 to 60 gr. FFg a 1 1/4 oz wad, and about 1 oz of shot. Adjust the load to fit.

Doc O,
Sorry you don't have your hulls yet but I had way to many irons in the fire at one time. I sent a good sized box out this afternoon by UPS. Box contains both cut and full length shells. There should be enough to keep you loading for awhile. Enjoy!!

Years ago I loaded up a bunch of Federal paper hulls with Pyrodex RS and while the cases had been fired once prior to their first Pyrodex reload, every single one of them came out with tiny pinholes burned through after only one shooting with Pyrodex.  I don't recall how much I used, but it was no great amount, heck, it was hard to fit enough in to even come close to the recommendations in the Dixie catalogue and still add one ounce of shot.  Is this common, or did I manage to do something wierd?  If I remember correctly, I used plastic wads with the petals cut off.  I can still remember the strings of plastic that came glopping out (technical terminology) when I poured boiling water down the barrels of the old hammer double to clean it.  I recalled it all as I read through this posting, and figured you all were the ones to ask...

Seth, The box is one that was made by Cheyenne Crtg box co. They are no longer made and I've been trying to find more for over a year now. One shooter who makes shooting sticks named Wind sent me three some months ago in answer to my ad. She is the only one who helped me out so good luck in finding some.

Doc O, I sent you a private message about the paper hulls. I think Royal sent me your hulls by mistake also. You received the ones I was supposed to receive.
