A Cowboy trick to help beat the cold.

Have been surprised how many don't seem to know this one, so here is how the real ones out on the Northern Plains do it in part, get out yer silk neck rag and follow along.

Lay it out flat:



Make a triangle:



Grab the bottom point and fold it over twice:



Wrap it around staring at the front of yer neck:



Pull the ends around to the front:



And tie:



The several layers of loose silk are warmer than wool scarves and not nearly as bulky.

Thousands of working cowboys can't be wrong.

Of course they also like Carhartt.

Don't forget that the bandana also makes a nifty half balaclava.  It was more than drag riders and outlaws that knew that trick.

Yep and you can also tie one over yer head like Grandma always did and it will keep yer ears warm, plus it is thin enough to still wear a proper hat.

You don't use yours to handle hot objects?  I use my cotton ones to grab the pot of coffee.

I'm not a real cowboy per se however, I dress western year around and during the winter I just use my old Air Force issue scarf.

There are a of cowboys here that wear the wild rag as you describe year around.

I have COPD and need to cover a little more neck so, I make the triangle and then wrap around my neck and tie in front. If I need more layers than that I don't go outside 'cept to go to Dr. The COPD and asthma has caused me to be closterfobic about buttoning the top button on a shirt but, a silk wild rag does do the job. I read somewhere that 70% of one's body heat lost to the environment is from the head.  So its true that "if your feet are cold, put on a hat."  Conversely, if you're prone to overheating (especially in the winter), remove or reduce your head covering.

A silk scarf on yer head like Grandma did is one of the warmest things I've ever used, don't restrict the hearin' much and it's thin enough you can still wear yer hat to keep either the snow or sun out of yer eyes.

If yoer feet are cold, toss those worthless cotton socks away and get wool ones.  Use them in the summer too, they keep yer feet cooler and drier than cotton.  Also get rid of that belt and put on a pair of suspenders, you can then wear looser pants and guess what, the warm bllod will flow to yer feet and legs better.
