The late 19th century was the start of this being bottled for sale away from the soda fountians.

A friend on another board sent me this link, a lot of these are not from the 19th century, but most of us here are Old Pharts and have fond memories of real soda pop with real flavors and real sugar in bottles worth 2-3 cents when you returned them.

seeing them bottles makes me think of all the different kinds of machines we used to get the pop out of,  the standard Coke machine, put yer nickle in push the handle get yer pop, the kind you lift the lid and it's all in little slots, work it out to the discharge, put yer money in and lift it out, the ones with the long doors where you choose yer flavor, put yer money in and pull it out, several changes through the years.  ;D
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

Too Bad we don't have those nickel pop machines any more.  RC, Nehi, Delaware Punch, and Frosty Rootbeer.   The Dr Pepper plant in Dublin, Texas(Oldest DP Plant) still uses Imperial Sugar instead of Corn Syrup.  These DP's don't taste anything like the regular ones you get at the store.  You can only get them at the plant in Dublin, the DP museum in Waco, and in and around Stephenville, Texas.

Walkin' ta the gas station with the ole man after supper in the summer. He liked ta go 'n just visit the folks. Fish out one ah the l'il bottles ah Coke outtah a lift-lid, run it back 'n forth thru the slots 'til ya got it out. Didn't have vendin' machines for the snacks. Had three big jars in the office with various Lance stuff in 'em.  Reach in 'n grab a bag of peanuts then pay one the guys. Folks didn't steal nuttin'. Dump 'em in the Coke, sit on the curb while the grown-ups talked 'n watch the traffic go by. Heaven for a l'il kid back in the day.

We always had a Soda machine at the garage and the parts store. We had those penny or nickel peanuts dispensers that various organzations left around.  I always enjoy the Spanish peanuts with the red skin on them, and put them in the coke bottle.

A high school buddie of mine, his folks run an Ice House & Gas station ( McNarys) when I was growing up in Riverdale Calif. (South of Fresno) They kept the pop in the ice house by the front door. They would'nt freze till you opened the bottle. Then It was like drinking almost frozen Soad Pop. Thier  Ice machine would make blocks of ice that weighed 300lbs each. It had marks in the sides of the Ice Block where you'd stick in the Ice Pick & break it down to smaller blocks. We'd break them down to 12 & 1/2 lb. blocks for grinding into  crushed ice & put into Triple wall brown paper bage & tie open end with a copper wire twist tie. They had a place where you could get ice after hours. Put some quarters in a coin slot, push in & out came a bag of ice or blocks, whatever you wanted.  Now days around Wichita,Ks you cant find block ice anymore everythings crushed. Wishbone

Silver Creek Slim

The local greasy spoon when I was in HS had a soda machine that dispensed "little" bottles. Not sure if they were 8 oz or 12 oz. I was used to the bigger bottles.

I've had Sprecher root beer. Good stuff.  ;D

Don't recall much, out this way.  RC, Coke, Nehi.  Most out of a cooler filled with ice and the opener on the front.  Usually a red "Coca Cola" cooler.   Really didn't drink much soda when I was a kid except when we went to the movies.  At home, the most popular drink was Exchange brand orangeade concentrate mixed 1 to 5 with water.   Growing up in this area, during the hot months we'd go down to the North Shore for shave ice instead.  :)

When I moved to this neck of the woods, I was introduced to Cheerwine (commonly referred to as Cherry Wine).  Not knowledgeable about the ways of "regional specialties", I thought it was a new drink on the national market.  Heck, Sodbuster tells me he can't even get it in northern VA.

If only Big Red would make it's way out here.  I know you can get it in Kaintuck, but it hasn't made it this far yet. :(

Miz Montana brought me some Cheerwine today....in a glass bottle.  This is a Cherry favor soda from North Carolina.

River City John

Sioux City Ginger beer is seen around here.

Seems to me there was a soda bottler in Omaha here that used to market a line of flavored sodas kinda like Fanta, . . .very cheap and probably all used the same base and just added different syrups. Cannot remember the name right now. Maybe it was Vess.

Vess seems right John, I remember the stuff.  Sioux City beverage is now owned by White Rock in NY but it is still sold around here, Sarsparilla, Root Beer, Ginger Beer and Birch Beer as well as Creme Soda.

I got Cream Soda once by mistake when I grabbed at a six pack of root beer and picked up the cream soda.  I didn't realize it until I got home, but not liking to return things, I gave it a try.  I've been addicted since.  I like it even more than root beer and am always willing to try a new one. ;D

The Cheerwine in the glass bottles is the best because it's *usually* made with pure cane sugar.  There are a few bottlers filling the glass with the corn syryp sweetened stuff. :P

Not that many years ago, you had to buy beer in Liquor stores in Lincoln.  All the Quck Shops had extra cooler space because they make them all about the same.  Used to get a lot of good stuff then.  Used to get on out of KY.  Heavy glass bottle, had a Ky Colonel on it, but not Harlan Sanders. ;D  Called Kentucky Nip, cherry soda with mint in it, durn fine stuff.

Sounds tasty.  I love the IBC Black Cherry soda.  That stuff has some good cherry flavor.

I love Big Red! We'd always bring back a few cases of Big Red whenever we went to visit our Grandmother in Indiana, Once in a while I'll see it in the larger stores around here.  I used to love Dr. Pepper, now it seems much sweeter and without that "bite" you used to get from it.  I think Mr. Pibb is closer to the old Dr. Pepper now.
