Don't know about its authenticity either but in Adler's Colt Black Powder Book, he does show a shoulder holster used by some "Farbish" reenactors playing the role of Mosby's Rangers.  Great discussion so far.

I have that same book, and thats kind of what got me interested in the shoulder rig discussion anyhoo. I love the one with the double flapped holsters and double shoulder rigs. pg 158 and 159. Many of those gents look pretty good with their rigs. DM

I made a little suede holster that I use to carry a little Colt "pocket pistol" in .36 cal. It is soft, comfortable and hangs well. It has a loop that fastens to whatever belt you want it to fasten onto, so it doesn't wobble around when you get up, sit down, or run. I'd like to make a little heavier model of the same holster for a longer-barreled revolver, like a RNV and see how it does.

I have one of those old .45 military holsters, too. I used it for years in the service.  Haven't thought much about copying aspects of it, but maybe I'll give that a look.

Dalton, the local library has a copy of it.  I check it out all the time to just stare at the pictures.  Lots of pretty colts!

Havent been around for awhile been doing the heathen g wiz gizmo game.. But this post caught my eye and I sorta went the oposite route, I have really learned to apreciate quality leather, so ordered a Ted Blocker Doc holiday mexican loop style shoulder rig custom made for a 5.5" Remington with the Mounted internal retention device so no straps needed. the strongside has a belt level pouch for a Spare R&D 45 cylinder. I love this rig, works really well keeping the gun out of the way when getting on and off the horse is concealable enough, can also hide in plane sight when wearing Confederate Cavalry garb. I liked this rig so much I ended up buying a M7 tankers for my lightweight 1911. to use as my fishing  concealed carry rig which is way easier to get to seated and seatbelted in a truck than a traditional strongside holster.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE making shoulder rigs. Plus, the guy that ordered the first one is about half my size. Took me most of a hide to get it right. I think I might make patterns to sell, though, since it'll save someone about a hundred dollars in leather, 5 pounds of coffee, a bottle of whiskey, and the value of tools thrown across the shop. (as well as time spent explaining to kids WHY they shouldn't repeat those words you were using!)
